If asked to recall to the last nonverbal communication you had, would you be able to remember about what you had communicated? There are several different ways that people can choose to communicate, whether it be through oculesics, haptics, or disfluencies. We use these different forms of nonverbal communication countless times a day, some more than others. For example, one way that communication can be affected is through proxemics, such as physical or personal territory. After examining the effects involving interpersonal space, territoriality, and environmental factors involved influencing my family’s communication in the home, I will highlight some ideas to improve our communication.

Taylor enjoys a lot of noise in her territory at all times. She always has music on or the television on, and she always has her friends on the computer, live, chatting with her at all times. When I try to communicate with her she doesn’t want to turn down the music or the outside noise, during our communication, and she doesn’t want to disconnect with her friends, rather she wants to “mute” them instead. My mother, Christy, enjoys the house colder than I do. It can be distracting to talk to someone when you are struggling to stay warm and searching for blankets. Also, my mother and I do want to communicate, I often get home from work and school at a late hour, after she has gone to bed. Exhaustion plays a part in our ability to communicate at that point, she is unable to communicate with me all the in’s and out’s of her day because she is unable to fully wake up and I do not have the heart to keep her make her stay awake any longer. I do however believe there are some things that we can do as a family to improve our
