This essay will demonstrate what I have learned about interpersonal communication and how I can apply it in my everyday life after reading the book, Inter-Act: Interpersonal Communication: Concepts, Skills, and Contexts, Fourteenth Edition written by Kathleen S. My grandma has contributed to my personal identity all throughout my childhood and adulthood. As a child, I remember her most positive affirmation, “You’re so smart!” I always thought “smart” was a great thing to be, so I incorporated “smart” into the image of who I was. Therefore, I started to behave in ways that demonstrated I was a smart kid and figured out I was fascinated with learning. That same character trait remains with me today. When I met with my grandma at Presbyterian Manor following knee surgery, I spent the better part of the day hanging out with her and watching television. Our conversation was mostly about my progress in school and career opportunities. About the time I was getting ready to leave, she said you should be proud of what you have accomplished so far. There is no doubt my grandma likes to point out the qualities I acquire. During our second meeting, she asked me what my plans were after I graduate this May. My response was to start submitting my resume in hopes of securing another assignment with an aerospace company, preferably out of state. She smiled and with pride told me, she is fortunate to have a grandson who is such a hard worker, a quality not everyone has. Another quality of mine is that I have goals, driving my ambition to get-up-and-go for my work.
