“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said” this quote by Peter F. Drucker just goes out to shows how important nonverbal communication. I always knew that nonverbal communication was important for example, when I go to a job interview, if I slouch while sitting, the interviewers immediately get an idea that I’m lazy. But what’s surprise to me is the amount of significance placed on nonverbal communication. One research shows that 65-70% of true meaning comes from nonverbal communication. So first of all, what is the definition of nonverbal communication? Nonverbal communication is behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning without the use of words (Floyd 178). Nonverbal communication serves as many functions but one of the most important function is influencing others. Nonverbal communication can be persuasive and it can help you create credibility, for example dressing up for an interview enhances your credibility. Another benefit of nonverbal communication is it allows us to conceal information, for example when one is trying to lie we cover by smiling, nodding or fidgeting and this helps us lie better and conceal information. Nonverbal communication nearly makes uses of all senses, that’s why learning about the different channels of nonverbal communication was important. There is a total of 10 channels which are; facial display, eye behavior, movement and gestures, touch behaviors, vocal behaviors, the use of smell the use of space, physical appearance, the use of time and the use of artifacts. Of all these channels, I feel that physical appearance and the use of time are two most important because depending on these two, people could easily make a perception of what kind of professional you are.
