There are many successful tools an individual can use to communicate effectively when facing interpersonal conflict. A person is sure to encounter conflict whether it is at work, among family and friends, or between relationship partners. Interpersonal conflict occurs when there is interference with a person’s effort to achieve a communicated goal by one or more individuals. Conflict can be managed in an effective way resulting in a deeper insight and connection. It is possible for interpersonal conflict to promote healthy and productive relationships. While watching an episode of the television series, Blackish, I identified an interpersonal conflict which occurred and will describe how it could have been handled effectively. It is important to have the knowledge of effectively handling interpersonal conflict because of the possibility of it causing discontent and aggression within relationships.
Handling interpersonal conflict takes patience, the willingness to listen, and effective strategies such as relationship maintenance behaviors. According to the textbook, Making Connections: Understanding Interpersonal Communication, “Relationship maintenance behaviors are defined as the actions and tasks that assist with maintaining, managing, or repairing a relationship” (Burleson, Metts, & Kirch, 2000).
