Emergency Department ED is considered the gateway to a medical care of the highest quality for sick people. It is the first line in the battle with the disease and even death, so medical staff involved in this unit must have a quality professional training and also, must have a high moral standing. Emergencies occur unexpectedly and not only in terms of the patient 's condition, but also in terms of staff. Therefore, as a charge nurse in such a unit, you have to be ready to solve the most unexpected events. The conflict reported above is one that not rarely occurs in a medical unit. Often it happens that one nurse can not give a specific patient care for various reasons. For example, one day on my floor, a male patient was brought from ED who refused to be cared by a foreign nurse and was very hard for the charge nurse to satisfied that request in the middle of the day, when all nurses had full assignment and she needed to make some adjustments in their assignments. It is very hard to manage effectively these kind of conflicts and the charge nurse must have good leadership skills. …show more content…
In our case, the charge nurse must resolve a conflict between the nurse who just came to work and who recently discovered that was pregnant, so theoretically, she can’t take care of a patient with meningitis and the other two nurses from 12-hour shift. At this point I think it is not fair to change their assignment four hours before change of the shift. Also, they argue their position by saying that when they were pregnant, they took care of all kinds of patients. The conflict arises when at the request of charge nurse, the two 12-hour shift nurses refuse to change their assignment to take care of the patient with

Work sometimes can get very busy while taking care of different patients. Always ensure that you are not leaving worksheets or paperwork in any patient’s room even if it belongs to that patient. Confidentiality can be breached for example on a busy schedule, a nurse taking care of two different patients may forget another patient’s discharge paper work in another patient’s room and that patient may read that information and thus confidentiality is breached. Nurses should also always check arm bands, because there could be two patients with the same last name and information may go to someone else that it’s not intended…

This is an extremely serious problem for nursing units to have because it demonstrates a lack of leadership, does not contribute to a healthy work environment, and can ultimately lead to poor-quality patient care. An example of this problem would be a staff nurse that does not get disciplined for clocking in late; this staff nurse is not disciplined because they is friends with management. Meanwhile, another staff nurse that is not friends with management gets disciplined for clocking in late.…

Nurses should always be aware of the professional competence of colleagues and other employees. Since the main goal of nursing is to provide for the well-being of patients, that includes being alert to incompetence or impairment to other medical care providers. If it is found that a medical caregiver is unable to provide adequate care, then the appropriate council should be notified to decide what to do about the situation to prevent anymore inadequate care being given to patients. A nurse has a responsibility to one's self as well as the patients. Nurses should treat themselves with the same care that they would a patient.…

Unlike many other professions, nursing is a career that requires vast amounts of communication skills with patients and fellow care providers. Communicating with many people is a large responsibility of the nurse, especially due to the obligation to maintain a professional standing within the workplace. In the modern health care profession there is a great amount of both civility and incivility that occurs amongst those who provide care for those in need. The acts of incivility that occur within those who work in these environments can lead to tension between the workers and an overall unsuccessful workday. Incivility is a negative act that needs to be addressed within each individual that is a part of today’s society.…

Background Information A literature review of patient handoff, and communication gaps of patient information during intrahospital patient transfers. The communication of complete and accurate patient information can be challenged, because of increasingly fast-paced and complex health care environments. Patient Handoff refers to, the process of transferring primary authority and responsibility for providing clinical care to a patient from one departing caregiver to one oncoming caregiver. Caregivers include attending physicians, resident physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and assistant care providers (Patterson, & Wears, 2010).…

Nurse Managers has to understand the organization’s mission, philosophy, strategic plan, goals and objectives (Cherry & Jacob, 2014). The goal of most health care organization is to provide high quality patient care and due to Cindy lateness, absenteeism, and unavailability on the unit to perform patient task, the quality of care patients are receiving are lower and also places other staff members in the position to either perform additional assigned patient task, taking time away from other patients or having Cindy’s assigned patient wait which reduces the quality of care they should be receiving. Cindy failure to follow the unit policy in taking vital signs and being absent from the floor to perform patient task falls under failure to follow standard of care which might lead to an issue of negligence…

In the ER priorities are always in place for every person in the department. “For us [it] is [putting] patient safety first, second is staff safety because it's an emergency room, third is making sure that we can have a good flow in the emergency room,” Nurse Medina says. Most people know that the ER is always hectic and busy, and the staff works around the hour to help the people coming in. Being the head staff of the ER seems difficult for one person, but Nurse Medina is always on top of her game when there is a lot of pressure. Medina says, “I perform extremely well all the time because having to allocate the patients where I have people coming in and ambulances coming in and I have to delegate transporters, clerks, nurses, nursing assistants, plus deal with the patients and know everything that's going on with every patient in the emergency room.”…

The AACN suggests nurses nurse staffing must ensure an effective match between nurse skills and patient needs (AACN, 2016). Not only does inappropriate staffing lead to medical errors, it can also bring about stressed and overworked nurses. The unit I work on is often short-staffed leading nurses to take on more than they are used to and leaving charge nurses scrambling to assign duties and calling in reinforcements. To the best of my ability, I will try to match my nurse’s abilities to the patient’s acuities and request critique if the assignments do not work effectively with current staffing. In order to address the staffing needs and the workflow that changes hour to hour, I believe the implementation of a resource nurse role will help address the staffing needs when patient loads become hectic.…

This highly specialized emergency medicine unit is intriguing to me mainly due to the infinite diversity it brings forth for the health care team in terms of clients’ clinical presentation, diagnoses, and interventions. Not only do clients vary based on contextual factors, but they also range in age, from newborn infants to older adults. All of this ambiguity adds to the complexity of emergency department nursing simply because the body of knowledge, communication skills, and clinical skills required of RNs is very broad and extensive in nature. Emergency medicine practice for an RN includes the accurate triage, comprehensive initial assessments, collaborating and coordinating care with the health care team to diagnose and treat clients, and reassessments based on vital signs and response to interventions, all in an exceptionally fast paced outpatient environment (ACEP, 2015). It also is a valuable window to the status of our current health care delivery system as it visually confirms common issues such as early discharges and high readmission rates, overcrowding, and low access of health care practitioners in the…
