Living in the digital revolution has given first world society many benefits as new interpersonal communication devices has given individuals the opportunity to connect in a way that is unique to the later half of the 20th century and the 21st century. The luxury of having everything available on a cell phone such as the ability to watch movies, tv shows, make phone and video calls, set reminders, and an endless variety of social media, cell phones may seem like the solution to every human need is available on a small device. The overstimulation of information from all forms of media is what social anthropologist, Paul Connerton, blames for creating a culture that rapidly forgets meaningful large-scale occurrences, by having a constant input of information these events of quickly replaced or overlooked. Modern forms of communications, like all technology, has its advantages as well as disadvantages understanding the harms of new technologies can encourage individuals to be critical of how using these technologies can be harmful to an individual as well as a society. Humans have a finite memory. The overwhelming amount of information individuals obtain from media devices is often just a passing thought. Important political and social matters are broadcasted to communities through television and the internet, the extensive knowledge delivered to individuals is rarely retained. New models of cell phones are released constantly, companies work to create better products with faster speeds, better graphics, and slimmer designs. With the use of a handheld cell phone individuals can communicate in many ways, such as using Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to share photos or directly message others. Video sharing websites such as YouTube provide videos for entertainment, politics, sports, education, and music. With the overload of stimulus and instant gratification received from these technologies is addictive, attention is spread over multiple sources at a time, the internet gives users the ability to see what they want instantly while skipping over everything the user has no interest in. This sort of instant pleasure received by using the internet is not a realistic expectation in real life. Progress often takes time; studying, working out, and saving money are all activities where results come from consistent hard work in order to achieve a goal. The society of instant gratification makes delayed gratification challenging, the attention given to activities which are beneficial long term are not focused on due to the vast availability of instant satisfying stimuli.
