Interpersonal Communication In The Blind Side

A popular proverb says, what a man [women]thinks in his heart so is he. This expresses the fact that the way we think impacts the person that we are. I believe this to be true, however our thoughts are a product of our self-concept which can be reinforced or changed by the communication that occurs within our interpersonal relationships. In the 2009 American Biographical sports drama, “The Blind Side,” they present the audience with many examples of the positive effects of good interpersonal communication in creating and maintaining a positive self-concept and self-esteem. The interactions of the main characters, Michael Oher and Leigh Ann Tuohy, played by Quinton Aaron and Sandra Bullock, and the entire Tuohy family demonstrates this. You can easily identify the Human Communication concepts self-concept, self-esteem, conflict, Johari Window technique, and debilitating emotion, as it drives the film. In this film the idea that a young man with a poor self-concept and self-esteem could be transformed by words is a testament to what having positive and supportive particular people in your life can do. By the end of the movie, Michael Oher was a changed man with a new identity, positive feelings of self-worth and high self-esteem, because the Tuohy ‘s changed his self-concept. Their relationship grew with the using of techniques such as the Johari Window technique and by successfully overcoming conflict. All relationships in general are tested through conflict which we all experience in life, but I believe that if these relationships survive they are solidified. Like the great NFL hall of gamer Tony Dorsett said, “Pressure either burst pipes or make a diamond” (Dorsett).
