Interpersonal Communication Skills Essay

Studying the interpersonal communication textbook was very educating. This textbook can help with your communication skills with your family, friends, and relationships. I would recommend this book to a lot of friends and family to read, because you can learn so much about yourself by reading each chapter. I also learned so much about myself. Most of the topics we discussed in class were very interesting to me. From chapter seven emotional messages really hit home for me, because most of the chapter was talking about many things I was dealing with right now. Listening helps maintain our personal relationships and be able to take notes in class. It’s important to understand that listening involves more than just hearing words that are directed at us. I think I’m a good listener if the conversation is interested to me. When you listen to people talk it’s very important to nod your head and say “uhhuh” or “yes I understand”. Sometimes the people that are talking they would probably ask you a question about the situation and if you don’t know than you were probably not listening. In the United States we have people who come from different countries and backgrounds. When I meet people who have very heavy accents I’m always curious about their background and where there from. In some cultures I have learned some words or actions done by Americans can be offensive in other states. I remember when I lived in South Korea it was offensive to point with one finger. When giving direction you use four fingers and face sideways to point in South Korea. From this chapter I learned to better communicate with someone from a different cultures.
