To be honest, I might have either added or changed my field of passion from this human services program. Originally, I wanted to get into the mental health field of human services/social work and possibly work in a hospital to care the patients. Instead, I might deal more with children (ages 16 years old and below) as examples from my experiences from my last two internships. As for how I got to this current position, it was from selecting internships between semesters. When ever a clinic I wanted to internship, I had to resort to my backup locations when ever a clinic is not looking or interested in an intern or got no response from them at all.…

Chapter 13 expands on the diversity within the Deaf community and how it can be viewed in both positive and negative light (Holcomb 267). Holcomb introduces the universality of the Deaf experience across the world in chapter 14, with remarks on the barriers and ways to overcome them (289). Lastly, Holcomb predicts three different futures for the Deaf community: a thriving community (304), and vanishing community (309), and a growing multihandicapped community (310). Within this book, four major topics were presented. These being: that Deaf culture meets the criteria to be defined as a definite culture; that ASL is a legitimate language; that the Deaf have a major impact on art and literature; and that the Deaf culture is vastly…

CRR #7 Observations: In the reading Our Town by Thornton Wilder I felt the feeling of being included in the audience because he gives us the layout at the beginning. Another detail that contributes to this feeling of being included is by having the stage manager speak directly to us. When he starts describing the town and how small it is it reminds me of Porterville and how nothing really happens there or here. I find it sad when the stage manager tells us about all the things Joe is going to accomplish but ends up dying in the war.…

Deaf Again is an autobiography of the life of Mark Drolsbaugh. Mark analyzes and discusses the psychosocial and educational aspects of deafness by using experiences and his family’s encounters throughout his life. He begins with Sherry, Mark’s mother’s experience of his birth to exemplify how the deaf are treated due to the communication gap between the deaf and hearing. He then discusses experiences that impacted his psychosocial, emotional, and educational development from the time he was diagnosed deaf as a child through to his adult years when he fell in love with deaf culture. Mark was born hearing and began losing his hearing in the first grade.…

This play took place in New Orleans, where everyone in particular has a distinct accent, the actors did an incredible job speaking with a southern accent the whole journey of the play. Eunice Hubbell, played by Jillian Jones, did not make a single mistake of speaking with her normal voice. Although she wasn’t a lead character, in the few lines she had, she was able to impersonate an authentic southern accent that impressed me a lot, not to mention that each and one of the actors spoke loud and clear which made possible for the audience to hear everything. Grossmont College has a small theatre which makes it difficult to have an elaborated set, but even if this was a minor set-back the director was able to produce an impressive ¬¬¬¬scenery that…

While waiting on line, a Deaf woman and her husband had a brief conversation with me. They asked if I was there for a school event, what school I went to, who my professor was, if my professor was hearing or deaf, and what level I was in. Being able to understand and actually communicate with other people in the Deaf community is very important. After talking with me, the woman recognized about ten other Deaf people and had long conversations with them. Different aspects of Deaf life were presented in the play itself.…

It is largely inevitable – a psychological reflex – to experience some degree of empathic pain,” and Harvey refers to these incidences as “‘a hundred echoes’ of Deaf people’s pain” (2003). Mistreatment is not isolated to the United States; around the world Deaf people experience oppression as interpreters watch from the sidelines. In a study by Lai, Heydon, & Mulayim (2015), of two hundred seventy-one interpreters in Victoria, Australia, “68% of Victorian community interpreters have to confront traumatic client material about an hour per week of their interpreting assignments” This study also reveals that a third of that sixty-eight percent “are experiencing exposure averaging 3.5 – 10 hears per week in their interpreting…

Another weakness I noticed in my work is I would apply my own knowledge and logic to my interpretations, which is a skill that can be great, but it can also backfire. For example, one docent signed something that I was certain was accidental, so I decided to correct her mistake in my interpretation. This was a strategy that I have seen other interpreters use, and know it to be effective, but I found it was the wrong choice for this moment. The docent caught my correction and made me reinterpret her statement, believing that what she signed was accurate. I noticed I struggled to interpret information that I knew was wrong.…

In mainstream society, we, as hearing people, tend to consider deafness as a defect. We tend to look at them with a feeling of pity. If they success in the hearing world, we will applaud them for overcoming a severe deficiency. We tend to consider signing as an inferior replacement for “real” language such as English or Spanish. We believe that all Deaf people will try to lip-read when communicating with hearing people as the only way to interact.…

Community, acceptance, pride and early linguistic intervention are the key issues that I found during my reading of Deaf Again. Our author’s experiences at Gallaudet University and the PSD finally gave him the feeling of existing and community. For the first time, he craved challenges and joined organizations because he did not feel left out. Drolsbaugh has now learned how to live life and was a big advocate of deaf children having every opportunity to interact with others like themselves. Without this exposure, Mark Drolsbaugh felt emotionally and cognitively much younger than his chronological age as compared to his hearing counterparts.…
