Summer 2015 Internship
Internship Field Journal
June 7, 2015: What were your first thoughts and observations when starting the internship?
Having had the opportunity to work with the Hoop of Learning Program during the previous summer session, I held on to the assumption that my duties were going to remain the same, however, that was not the case. The changes between my experience last summer and this summer are that I am no longer a work study student, thus I have been given more access to the colleges’ systems, which is used by faculty to access student files. Since having access to student files I have been able to partake in the students’ academic career from the start to their completion of the program.

I signed up to be a mentor for the GEN1 Scholars Mentor Program and the student I was matched with was Sandy Gomez a Hispanic/Latino female, senior, first generation, commuter student who’s major is Music. She is a hard-working student who is very busy. The challenge we are having is connecting with each other face to face, with both of our busy schedules. The good thing is I signed up to mentor her for a semester and not just a few weeks. Through this assignment I have been able to attend two workshops regarding Gen1 Scholars mentor handbook and OARS:…

I am writing to express my interest in the teaching internship for Vela Summer Scholars Program. As a first-year student interested in teaching, I joined Ed Pros at Amherst College, which is where I first heard about the Vela Scholars Program. I was drawn to Vela’s focus on exploratory learning and emphasis on strengthening connections to the community. At Amherst, from volunteering as an ESL conversation partner at the Jones Library to becoming a music tutor for the Wildwood Elementary band, I am eager to become more involved in the community at Amherst. Vela would be an ideal place to connect with middle school students at Amherst Regional Middle School and explore teaching.…

law firm internship. An agonizing few days passed as I waited for a reply, and I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen for the internship. No words could explain how excited I was but the smile that filled my face said it all. At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…
