Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Social Worker

Improved Essays
I feel that my time at my internship has flown by. September feels like it was just maybe three months ago. I first met my field instructor in the summer for our interview and he said that his impression of me was that I embodied a social worker and would make a great intern at the high school. At the time, I had no idea what that meant or would look like but I was flattered, nervous, and yet excited to start a new chapter in my life. Helping others has been something I have wanted to do my entire life. I was ready to meet a challenge, interning at a high school consisting of 16-24 year old at risk youth seeking their high school diploma.

It was tough for me to admit I needed help and I reached out to a therapist at my church. Reaching out and being vulnerable has been the best thing I have done for myself. Seeing my therapist regularly has opened my eyes to all the hurt I have been carrying inside me from my past. It has taught me that being vulnerable is not something to be ashamed of but something I must do to rid myself of my hurt inside. Furthermore, it has taught me to remove the lies I have about myself and embrace the real me. The real me is someone who is passionate about helping others and motivated to do so. I feel that I have become a better person after seeking help. I can now be a better social worker to my clients and a better person to the people in my life.
A tough transition as well was changing field instructor’s mid-year. However, I see why this was meant to be. My first field instructor, Mark taught me a lot about myself and helped build my self-confidence as I just mentioned. My field instructor Reyna has taught me everything I need to know about case management and also tuning in to my clients. She has provided me the tools I need to get me ready to seek employment once I graduate. I am very grateful that I not only have had one but two amazing

I didn’t know the real explanation till the day I applied to the fellow program. The word “fellow” actually means a lot to me today. It is not only one of the reasons people recognize me on campus, but also something I am very proud of. The role of fellow helped me learn lots of useful skill as well as shape the roads of my future journey. While the spring 275 class taught me the resources to be a better peer mentor, the fall 276 section helped us apply all these skills into real circumstances.…

Especially in counselling and therapy, it’s best to love and care for people just like G-d did. G-d gave His one and only son to die for us and He did this because of His love for us. Throughout my career, I will try to my hardest to treat patients with compassion and pray for them every day. I am pursuing this career because I want to help people have a better and healthier life and I think that trusting the Lord through it will help me make that…

As mentioned previously, I feel it is important to respect everyone regardless of their differences. By valuing the dignity and worth of a person as a social worker, we are striving to empower people and by increasing the clients desire to change their own needs, so we are essentially building up their self-worth and dignity, which will hopefully pour into society. By respecting a person, it nourishes the importance of human relations. When respect is given, respect is earned. By respecting the clients, families, organizations, and communities, it makes it easier to advocate for…
