It has been said that when you are trying to make a case, using anecdotes is one way to do it. So here is a recent experience during one of my observerships. A 50 year old male presented with sudden onset “out of the blue” syncope. He was noted to be newly bradycardic and was scheduled for a pacemaker placement. The astute internist I was working with obtained a thorough history and physical examination and made a case for Lyme carditis based on circumstantial evidence. A subsequent serology confirmed the same and the patient’s bradycardia resolved with appropriate antibiotics (which meant no pacemaker…A procedure avoided…expensive and limited medical resources to be put to good use somewhere else). I was twelve and my mother needed medical care. He was respected and honored for his service to the community. It was probably my first clear memory of being in a hospital and understanding how medicine made a difference to the lives of people you loved and cared for. It also was a seed for inspiration to become a doctor. My parents taught me to recognize the value of an education and the difference it makes in the lives of people. I am also scheduled to observe in a outpatient primary care clinic.

After completing an Internal Medicine residency, I want to obtain further training. The field of training I am further interested in will probably become clearer as I train in Internal Medicine and get exposed to the different specialty rotations. I see myself being an internist who will advocate for the underestimated and undervalued power of preventive medicine as well as someone who will enunciating on furthering the practice the evidence based medicine.

I believe I am a hardworking and compassionate human being who is a great listener, has a strong work ethic and practices good communication skills.
