Internet of Things, also widely referred to as IoT denotes the internetworking of physical devices with software, network connectivity and sensors that enable them to communicate. The physical devices include buildings and vehicles. These physical devices are embedded with actuators, electronics, network connectivity and sensors that enable them to collect and exchange data leading to an infrastructure of the information society. Through the sensors and internet connectivity, Internet of Things enables the remote control of these physical devices. It facilitates the integration of the physical world into computer based systems. Thus, efficiency is improved, as well as economic benefit and accuracy. For instance, heart monitoring through the use of implants, use of biochip transponders on livestock, field operation devices to aid firefighters and policemen in search and rescue operations, Pathogen and food monitoring, Use of built-in sensors in automobiles and incorporation of DNA analysis devices in environmental control. The word Internet of things was first coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 to define a system in which internet is connected to the outside world via sensors (Postscape LLC, 2016). However, the word had also been slightly used by Peter T. Lewis on a speech at U.S. Federal Communications Commission in 1985. Kevin Ashton defined IoT as uniquely identifiable interoperable connected objects with radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology (Li , Xu , & Zhao, 2014). The words “Internet” and “Things” means an inter (Gartner, 2016)connected world-wide network which is based on sensory, communication, networking, and information processing technologies which can be a new version of information and communications technology (Li , Xu , & Zhao, 2014). Home automation is a method, system or a technique of controlling or operating a process by reducing human involvement. Apart from being efficient, this technology is also economical as it saves water and electricity. The extraordinary growth of internet has created new and exciting opportunities for the home automation (Gunge & Yalagi, 2016). Smart home is one that gives the home owner security, comfort, energy efficiency and convenience irrespective of the location, as the owner can control the devices through Internet (Han & Tan, 2002). Home automation is increasing leaps and bounds due to its numerous benefits. Connecting devices to the internet so that they can be monitored and controlled via internet on smartphones or on web browser ranging from connected tooth brushes to home appliances and also Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) (Han & Tan, 2002). Smart devices can be purchased online or from the shelves, or can be supplied by service providers which essentially brings home automation in our daily use. As per (Gartner, 2016) predictions a typical household will contain at least 500 devices by 2022.
In the past few years’ wireless devices like smartphones, remote controls, tablets, personal computers, and laptops have played a major role in home networking.
