Memes have been created as interesting form of cultural expression. They can appear to be very stupid, and a lot of them are, but they have the ability to make a commentary about what is going on in society whether it’s direct or in direct. Memes are like tiny satires, ridiculing the actions and words of some people in order to make some sort of point or even more often a joke. There are memes about athletes and sports, celebrities, and actions of a more general population (i.e. white girls, Republicans, etc.). The idea is that a phrase or an image is used in conjunction with either an image or phrase that is meant to make fun of the subject.…

In James Gleick’s article What Defines a Meme, memes are compared to complex organisms that could self-replicate and evolve within or between hosts. Like genes, memes can be furthered by natural selection; while the former needs a physical medium, the latter is abstract and constantly changing (mutating). Memes “exploit” human brains, languages, the Internet, and all kind of mediums to advance its own survival. Gleick argues that memes are as powerful and destructive as virus and epidemiology, while people are made to think that they are benefiting from memes and are compelled to keep spreading them. In the end, Gleick concludes that as much as people hate to admit, it is people who are enslaved by memes.…

People who disseminate information through media are in possession of one of the most influential tools in society. Popular cartoonists fall under this category, as they can project their biased and personal perspectives on reality. “What political cartoonists portray may be an imaginary situation in allegory or a figure greatly distorted by caricature, but to the artists this is the essence of what is actually happening” (Charles Press, The Political Cartoon) Many cartoonists truly believe that their “distortion” of reality captures the reality everyone else is experiencing. Therefore, images circulated in society have the potential to convey opinions and stereotypes.…

As a result that is what makes us different from animals and even technology; our ability to have memes control us as Susan Blackmore explains in her essay “Strange Creatures”. For instance, Susan Blackmore states, “We humans, because of our powers of imitation, have become just the physical ‘hosts’ needed for the memes to get around.…

In Susan Blackmore’s “Strange Creatures” she describes the concept of the “memes eye view”. She claims the “memes eye view” is what makes humans different from animals, meaning humans can imitate therefore must be different from animals. As a reader dwells more on the thought of the “memes eye view” they can relate it to life experiences and other works of literature. For example, the “memes eye view” can be seen very clearly in “Bumping into Mr.Ravioli” by Adam Gopnik. In Gopnik’s work he describes how his daughter started to pick up the busy life style that her mother, brother , and father had adopted just by watching them through the "memes eye view".…
