The internet holds valid information on many of topics. It is used in everyday life to learn and share ideas. For many the internet is a place of knowledge and expansion of the mind. There has been debate on whether the internet actually helps the mind think or slows down the process. Some observers have decided the internet and its distractions lead to low critical thinking skills, and scattered thoughts. The idea that the internet, home to infinite knowledge, can lessen the mind is ridiculous.
Steven pinker, a Harvard professors, doesn’t believe that the internet can take away from the critical thinking skills, he believes though that they must be continuously worked on. Pinker knows that there are distractions …show more content…
Pinker explains how even though the collective knowledge of the world is increasing, our minds can only take in so much information. The internet helps us access that information and helps us to focus on key items. Pinker believes “Far from making us stupid, these technologies are the only things that will keep us smart.”(221)
The internet will always have distractions, but so will life. There will always be disturbances that cause one to lose track of the task at hand. In order to get past them, we must be willing to work on strengthening our minds. We as a people shouldn’t let little things such as ringers or advertisements take away our focus from learning or whatever we were doing.
The mind cannot be slowed by over utilizing the internet, it will not be hurt or rewired just because you looked something up on the internet. Now given wrong information can be dangerous to the mind and trying to remember the right information after is tricky after putting the incorrect information inside, but it will not reshape the way we think or how fast we process information. Though some critics believe the brain can be changed by new information, neuroscientists have found this to be untrue and roll their eyes at this very idea. The brain, though having neural plasticity, is not shaped by incoming information. The internet offers us a wide range of knowledge, just like a book, all we must do is utilize its resources and retain them. Being able to stay on task isn’t a new concept created by the use of the internet, it is a process that is ever changing and one we must learn to use in order to survive in this ever changing world. The internet is full of knowledge and vital information, we can’t be afraid to take advantages of the tools in our possession, especially when the fear is proven
