In September 2014, the internet hit the milestone of one billion websites. With over 1,200 petabytes of data. There is no way to censor all of this data, but we must try. Illegal and explicit content can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Videos of violence, abuse, etc. are seen by children and adults alike mostly by accident. These things aren’t appropriate for people of any ages to see or hear. When children see these videos they become desensitized to violence. Acceptance of this behavior leads to repetition by the child. Increased acceptance of this behavior leads to a declining society filled with crime. At the same time, we must preserve people’s rights. We can’t allow the government to censor people’s thoughts or actions. The first amendment also states that every citizen has a right to the freedom of speech. Our tweets and posts are personal thoughts and should be left alone. Simply because we don’t like something doesn’t mean it should be taken down. Where could I find funny cat videos if someone took it down because they dislike cats. The internet also allows people to express themselves anonymously therefore letting them speak freely on topics they may not want to talk about otherwise. This anonymity means that these comments are not attached to their name and reduces backlash for controversial ideas. Additionally, sites like WikiLeaks allow for people to see what our government does behind the scenes. This information lets us see what they try to hide from the public. If these sites were censored then people lose access to knowledge and with knowledge comes power. If we all roamed the earth like sheep just embracing whatever the government does we would be slaves.
