"In terms of monitoring Internet content, I believe there is a fine line in allowing first amendment rights to freedom of speech and press, while also not going overboard in regards to censorship. In today’s world of human sex trafficking, sexual scandals in our school systems, and cyberbullying, there has to be some form of monitoring Internet content to protect our young people. At the same time, I don’t want big brother knowing every email or social media message I send to every friend or family member. Can there be a compromise? Censorship in the media has been a controversial topic ever since the founding of the United States. From the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 that restrict the rights of immigrants, under the John Adams presidency, to the Edward Snowden and NSA scandal in 2013 that concerned government surveillance of its citizens and government transparency. These controversies have caused a public backlash against media censorship of any kind but there are aspects of media censorship that protect society rather than hurt it. Instead of hiding government secrets or preventing certain political ideas from being expressed, media censorship can be used to hide criminal’s and victim’s names as well to hide sensitive and graphic images or video from the public.…

" When examining the question Does government have the civic duty to monitor internet content, I look at the internet for answers. I determined that the government doesn't exactly control because social media reserves its rights to be free from control in the clause of the first amendment "" Freedom of the Press"". At first I believed this statement but when looking at more information I learned that our local governments turn to social media first when looking for a person. I was talking to a police officer when he told me something that stuck with me. " "Everything you thought you deleted never really did get deleted off the internet"".…

The Amendments of the Constitution, were made to protect people's rights. While presently all of these amendments are enforced, it is evident that nowadays the concept of each amendment is getting blurred and it is important to remember not to stray from how our founding fathers envisioned our country to be. "Recently, there has been a debate over the extent of whether the American government has a duty to monitor internet content. The first amendment of the constitution grants American citizens the right to freedom of speech; many people believe this allows them to say whatever they feel, however if what they say affects the country or puts it in danger, the government has to draw a line. Although the government should not control everything we say, there should be a duty they have to keep our country safe. As far as local government is concerned, the internet and it’s content does not need to be regulated as harshly. There are however, extreme cases such as cyberbullying, where it is important to look into internet usage and regulate the students doing the bullying.…

" I believe in limited government access to internet, and their duty to monitor internet activity. We have an excellent government differing from many other countries, but when it comes down to our governments accessibility to internet, the tables may turn. We as Americans should thrive off of a limited government, responsible people idea. If the people abide by, and respect their civic duties and responsibilities, our government will not feel obliged to monitor online material. Though it seems I am proposing everybody be ""good guys"" on the internet, the simple task is that of making responsible choices via the internet, therefore less government oversight of internet usage.…

Ever since people have communicated, people have wanted to encourage some ideas, while suppressing others.
