What is the Internet of Things? Liang Zhou from Nanjng University of Posts and Telecommunications and Han-Chieh Chao from the National Ilan University define it as “The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel network architecture that is rapidly gaining attention in the scenario of next-generation wireless telecommunications” (Liang Zhou). The large networking company, Cisco has defined it as “The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasing the connectedness of people and things on a scale that once was unimaginable. Connected devices outnumber the world 's population by 1.5 to 1” (Cisco). OWASP, the large community group that focuses on IT Security uses the Oxford dictionary definition “a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data” (Owasp). Wind Driver defines it as “The ability to connect, communicate with, and remotely manage an incalculable number of networked, automated devices via the Internet…” (Wind Driver 2). After reading all of those definitions it is simple to understand that the Internet of Things is essentially devices that are connected to the internet that can send and receive information (Owasp).
When connecting a device to the internet you must be aware of several security concerns. A few of those concerns are who can connect to it? Is there complex password rules? Is the data it’s sending and receiving encrypted? A variety of devices are made to do only one…
