Breakfast alone, however, is one of the most important meals because it has a much more significant effect on our bodies. Breakfast is perceived to be so vital to one’s health and functioning because, according to the Australian Department of Health and Human Services, “it breaks the overnight fasting period, replenishes your supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day” (2016). This in turn may contribute to improving an individual 's cognitive performance as well as their academic performance by, most importantly, providing an adequate amount of energy to achieve this. Therefore, does eating breakfast on a regular basis improve a student 's ability to earn a higher GPA?

110). For the experiment, two groups were randomly selected from a group of 20 participants which included both boys and girls of ages 12-14. One group was provided breakfast by the research team while the other did not and the children then participated in two different types of cognitive tasks which “specifically challenge[d] attributes associated with attention and memory” (Fulford, Varley-Campbell, & Williams, 2016, p. 112). When observing the children’s performance in the tasks, reaction time as well as the number of errors/correct answers given was taken into consideration. Although there was a slightly faster reaction time and a lower number of incorrect answers by the children who had eaten breakfast before performing, Fulford, Varley-Campbell, & Williams concluded that these differences were not considerable enough to be used as evidence for any relationship between breakfast and task performance (2016, p. 113). When looking at the participants’ fMRI results, activity in certain parts of the brain was somewhat higher in those who had
