Roman regional and international trade was a common. A mix of state control and a free market economy made positive goods produced in one location could be exported far away and nearby. Cereals, wine and olive oil were exported in huge quantities while in the other direction came large imports of gold, marble, and spices.
Romans over time developed a more intelligent economy after the production of an agricultural surplus, population movement and urban growth, national expansion, technological innovation, taxation, the spread of coinage, and the need to feed the city of Rome itself and supply its huge army wherever it might be fighting. Overall a need for more food and advanced technology pushed Rome to fix its own problems.
