International Student Retention Scholarship

Decent Essays
I started school in the fall of 2013 and I am currently in my junior of school. All these years I have been involved in opportunities that gave me an exceptional opportunity to excel and at the same time helped for partial financial aid. Some of these opportunities included the International Student Retention Scholarship (January 2015- January 2016), my part time job at the student sustainability center, an event planner for Portland State Programming Board. All of the above opportunities and achievements have always motivated to attain my goal. However, I feel pressured because I have often ended up paying for my tuition, expenses, and living here. I am honored to be considered a possible future member of our high school’s National Honors Society. I do my best to commit myself to becoming someone extraordinary. Back in middle school, I was a satisfied member of the National Junior Honors Society, and I would like to feel the same about NHS. I remember knowing how to be a leader with great character, being proud of my citizenship, and serving the community. I still have these qualities today, and, as a member of NHS, I could definitely improve each of these qualities.…

Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…

Watching my classmates graduate from a four-year college I used to attend before I took a break and, understanding that they are about to begin their careers without hustle and tussle of school work gives me a sense that I may have fallen behind in my life’s journey. Even though I have 2-3 years left in school to get a bachelor’s degree, I want to be a student my age with job that gives them a 401k Patient care technician is a great profession because it requires a short time of training for a salary of $50000 in New York City.…

Being a member of this distinguished society is what I have strived towards since elementary school. Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

Growing up is was no question whether or not I was going to college, it was an automatic yes for me. No one had to ever ask me if I was going to college because they all knew that the answer is yes. The reason why I knew that I had to go to college was because everyone in my family went to college; now don’t just think that because everyone in my family went to college that we are a bunch of rich snobs. We have all been hit with the reality of struggles in life. That’s why I learned quickly that you don’t just go to college so you can get a better education you have to be able to do something with that education.…

In William Zinsser’s article, “College Pressures,” he explains the four pressures students faced in the late 1970’s. The pressures include: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure and self-induced pressure. These students had an immense amount of pressure, and Zinsser’s wish was for them to delight in their educational journey. Granted, the pressures Zinsser mentions continue to exist nowadays; current students face even greater pressures. For one, in order to afford tuition, books and essential expenses, thousands of student work a full time job.…

Being raised in a Nigerian household, I learned that success requires dedication, but a successful person also inspires others to be dedicated. I knew that my parents could not pay for four children to attend college, and I could have worried all day and night thinking about how I going to get through college financially. That did not stop me, however, from taking the responsibility onto myself and striking when the opportunity arises. Repeating scientific facts outloud like a broken record or having an independent study session for four additional hours are things I would do given an extra day before the exam. One goal that is greater than my personal aspirations is to have a direct impact on my community so that children can have another person to relate to.…

The intention for my argument is to increase international graduate student recruitment and retention at Pfeiffer University. My main argument is that Pfeiffer University should partner with an apartment complex where international students could live in a close community. If international students lived all together in one building (apartment complex) it would help them to overcome the cultural shock, language barrier and other difficulties throughout their educational process because they would go through the same problems together. Moreover, it would automatically solve their problem with finding a place to live.…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…
