The aims of this report are to provide an overview of an international student's life in Australia, with focus on learning oppurtunities, accommodation possibilities and everyday social life of an exchange student. Some recommendations for international students will be provided as well.
Background information
This report is going to be based on Simeng's experience. Simeng Gao is a student from Bejing, China. She is currently studying Interpreting and Translation, at the University of Western Sydney, where she came as a part of an international student exchange program. Before coming to Australia she imagined it to be a strictly white and English speaking community, where she could not fit in. Here they can meet new people and engage in various social activities, such as different sport and board games. This helps students to relax and have some fun, which makes studying abroad a very rewarding experience and also enables them to learn about differnet cultures and to make connections with people which will last a lifetime.
Recommendations
In my opinion everyone who has the oppurtunity should take part in an international student exchange program. To these students I recommend:
• If there is a language barrier, do not be afraid. The best way to learn a foreign language is by conversations with people who are either native speakers or have more experience than you.
• Do not have any prejudices about different countries and people groups. You can only benefit from this experience, and come out of it with more knowledge and friends.
Finally I think exchange programs are a great possibility to improve your personal and professional skills and to broaden your
