Similar to many first year teachers, I lack skills to efficiently communicate with parents. Often, education courses are so focused on the art of teaching they forget about other important job essentials. In fact, after realizing that parental interaction is an essential job duty, I worried about how to proactively interact with parents. I strive to be an effective teacher but evidently cannot do so without parental…

In Caroline Bird’s “College in America”, she describes the belief that college is the key to success for all high school graduates as a “noble American ideal” (336). Bird portrays the United States as the first nation to influence everyone to pursue a higher education. However, Bird asserts that striving for a college education is not the best option for every high school graduate, due to the money being invested and the lack of jobs being offered for college graduates. I endorse Bird’s argument that “it [the assumption that college is indispensable to succeed] violates the fundamental principle of respect” (336) because college only comes naturally to a few, not everyone is fit for the challenges that come along. College is not the perfect…

efforts to prepare career and college ready graduates. Career and technical education is thought to be useful to students because it demonstrates the application of classroom learning in the real word, engages them by using authentic tasks and tools, and teaches them employable skills. While some argue that students who take part in career and technical education are provided opportunities to extend classroom learning and develop critical understating of potential work environments (Brown, 2003; Stern, Rahn, & Chung, 1998), others argue that this type of education decreases the student’s school performance and willingness to enroll in higher lever courses (Hughes, Moore, & Bailey, 1999). However, evidence has shown that career and technical education may be a promising way to increase student’s educational engagement as well as career readiness and attainment (Symonds, Schwartz, & Ferguson, 2011; Alfred, Charner, & Watts, 2013; Darche, Nayar, & Bracco, 2009).…

Since our knowledge and understanding of things around us is constantly changing, we are continuously adjusting how we go about our daily lives and our jobs so we need to change the way we prepare to tackle these changes.
