Why is the ability to work in a team important and highly appreciated?
The Oxford dictionary defines the term “teaming up” as when two or more people come together to achieve a common goal (Oxford dictionary, 2016). Research has identified that teamwork satisfies two basic human needs that individuals have when coming to work. These needs are:
1. Camaraderie: To have warm, interesting and cooperative relationships with others in the workplace.

This much sought after innovation is greatly enhanced through team based work, in which diversity of thought is a fundamental ingredient for progress in the twenty-first century (Roco & Bainbridge, 2013). Moreover, the effective application of technology and other physical assets will only ever be as strong as the human component driving it. In order to integrate new members successfully it is important to ensure that they feel welcomed and comfortable in their new job and new environment.
It is also important to have a program (Induction process) that not only teaches technical skills but also educates the new member with regard to the history of the company and “who is who” in the organization.
First impression is critical. Therefore, the new person should be introduced to the group on the first day in friendly and relaxed atmosphere (for example during the coffee break).
A buddy should support everything a new member needs (training regarding the equipment and tasks, tour of facilities).
Including the new member in the team meetings from the very beginning could help the person feel better integrated and can also provide new ideas to the team.
The team leader should create regular social get-togethers (lunch, breakfast time) in order for the new person to develop professional relationships. The team lead should also have regular one-on-one meetings with the newcomer and offer support and
