In the story Nathan’s choice he has a major internal conflict. He did not know if he wanted to stay with his uncle with the hopes of becoming a frontiersman or go with Jeremy on the open seas. He ends up choosing to stay in the eleventh hour while he is on the wagon to leave with Jeremy. The reason Nathan wanted to stay was that working the many hardships his uncle tasked him with made him a stronger man. In paragraph 3, sentence 4 Nathan states “I aim to be a frontiersman.” The only way he would be able to acquire that skill set was from his uncle.
