In the paper written by Evangelos Ergen, he focuses on the informal communication process which is deemed highly important to both internal and external company progress. The paper is centered around research conducted by James Granger on the topic of communication obstacles companies were facing in the 1970s. Most importantly Granger identified three main obstacles, “… the existence of fear among employees; the inertia due to a non-rewarding system; the sense that management did not care about their problems; the fear that disagreement will block their promotions; and the lack of supervisory accessibility and responsiveness,” (Ergen, 2010, p. 1). As a remedy to the situation uncovered by Granger, he proposed three simple solutions: build trust, promote integrity, and get out from behind the desk.
Ergen goes on to review several literary works concerning the communication process. The first is The Concise Handbook of Manager: A Practitioner’s Approach by Jonathan Scott (2005). In it, Scott goes on to say that, “… communication is about sending, receiving, and understanding information and meaning,” (Ergen, 2010, p. 1). He further explains that the sending and receiving of messages is most important as a received response validates a successful transference. Guo and Sanchez further define communication, “… as the creation or exchange of thoughts, ideas, emotions and understanding between sender(s) and receiver(s),” (Guo & Sanchez, 2005).
