Letting the other happen to me, means allowing someone else’s ideas, thought, and feelings that are different from their own influence them (Stewart, 2009, p. 560). When people let the other happen to me they learn so much more than they ever thought possible which strengthens their quality of life. Jules is able to gain the courage to accept her fate by letting Ben happen to her, she takes on his viewpoint and is not so quick to forgive Matt. People realize that communication is complex, continuous, and collaborative. They also recognize that no matter what has happened before and no matter how bad things currently look they always have the option to try a next step (Stewart, 2009, p. 30). The goal of nexting is to create steps that improve one’s life, which usually takes place in the form of a conversation. Discussing with oneself and others what is going to be their next step(s) is a great way to get the most out of one’s life. During the entire movie, Jules plans her next steps by communicating with Ben about what course of action is best, which leads her to remain the CEO because that is what her heart is telling her. It is important to always contemplate what one is going to do next. What they are going to do next to create a positive influence in their lives. This may or may not include them implementing these interpersonal communication concepts into their future conversations. Every one of these concepts has the ability to get the most out of people’s conversations, relationship, and lives. The process of interpersonal communication is important to know and understand, it is communication between persons.
