However, ‘space’ and ‘place’ have completely different meanings when being referred to in design. Space has a much more abstract meaning, in that it is referring to all that surrounds us. A place refers to somewhere specific. How space becomes a place is when a person lives and engages there causing it to have a deeper meaning to them. This mechanism of transforming ‘space’ into ‘place’ is known as appropriation. Appropriation refers to the act of taking or making something as one’s own.
“Appropriation of space is a term that has been used in environment and behavior research to describe individuals' and groups' creation, choice, possession, modification, enhancement of, care for, and/or simply intentional use of a space to make it one's own … Appropriation is conceptualized as an interactive process through which individuals purposefully transform the physical environment into a meaningful place while in turn transforming themselves” (Roux, Scrima, Werner 61). This idea is most often seen in college students. Below are pictures of a student’s apartment bedroom. Even though this student did not grow up here, they brought along pieces of their life and included them into the room to give it meaning. However, not only does the meaning of the place come from the artifacts included but also the new experiences and memories made there. Thus, making it a new place for them to create an emotional attachment. So even though this may not be there original place, it is a new place and home to them because of it represents them and posses old and new memories.
Another type of object or artifact that a resident may be attached to is the furniture. To most college students, the strongest attachment to an object in their bedroom is their bed. To them, their bed is the best place in the world to be because it provokes feelings of comfort and
