An Innovative Intergenerational Community Center That Will Benefit the Young and Old The US Census Bureau projects that by 2030 over one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. Unfortunately, the aging US population, family demographic changes, modern technologies, and social philosophies of individualism is causing the young and the old to be distanced or segregated from one another. This segregation is making it so they are missing out on positive exchanges of valuable life lessons. It is important that every community be aware of this weakness in our society that is resulting in a form of social exclusion of the young and old. Thus, it would be beneficial to all three generations to have an intergenerational care center close to their children’s schools that could provide before and after school care and older adult day care.
The author proposes the building of a new intergenerational community center on the property adjoining our local Brownwood Assisted Living (AL) facility. This facility is close to our local elementary and middle schools making it easier to provide transportation between the schools, Supportively, Generations will provide an integrative solution to comfort parents who are worried about leaving their 11-14-year-old children at home alone for those whose traditional after school programs ended after fifth grade graduation.
