These results already show us that younger Americans read on rare occasions and older Americans read more often, but these occasions are still seldom. This decrease in interest in reading has only lowered as technology has grown. The more technology we have, the less interest we show in reading for pleasure and for gaining knowledge. With more research and studies they showed respondents ages 16-29 are less likely than adults 30 and older to say they read for pleasure; 76% of those younger than 30 read for this reason, compared with 81% of adults 30 and older. Obviously looking at these studies shows that interest in reading has decreased over time. This same group of researchers looked into what the younger readers enjoyed about reading their most common answer was to learn, gain knowledge, and uncovering information. Some of the other respondents said they enjoyed escaping …show more content…
All of the studies that PewInternet has done on this subject have shown that using print books has become less and less common in our everyday lives. This change in our society has caused a change in our minds in how we comprehend information and paper texts. Continuing with our advancements PewInternet wanted to look toward the future so they asked respondents about E-book usage in the future. The responses ranged from an advanced system with multiple options to making a way that E-readers and E-books borrowable. “E-books are the future of libraries…”(Looking to the future par 4). Even though many people love the use of E-books and E-readers some have stated that they would be upset if print books were gotten rid of completely.
Dean Andrew Dillon, a University professor, said “the way online content is formatted leads to breaks in attention span, which can then make it more difficult to return to extended texts, such as

An individual will prefer to use the Internet for browsing than going to a library and looking for the same information in a book. It is quite possible that there will come time when books will no longer be around because people are addicted to the multimedia world. According to Bradbury, various historical and political parties dictated the correlation of people into burning books and going to the…

As the great Bob Dylan once said,” The times they are a-changin’.” Now, currently in the twenty-first century according to www,huffingtonpost.com,” There's overlap between the groups -- 28 percent of respondents did not read a book at all in the past year, while 25 percent read between one and five books, 15 percent read between six and ten books, 20 percent read between 11 and 50, and eight percent read more than 50.” This quote proves fewer and fewer people read books in today’s world. One might say the reason this being is because people either have audiobooks and are being read to, are too caught up in social media, electronics T.V.,...etc. And some might say they just do not care.…

Is Google Making Us Stupid? When it comes to this topic on the internet versus our intelligence, I have a similar case to argue that Nicholas Carr, the author, explains. I agree with the argument that Google, or the Net in general are corrupting and shaping our minds. Carr starts off by describing his experience with deep reading.…

To some, books are just words on worthless paper. To others, empty promises written on a page. Yet, to others, they are a way to get away from the “real world” and dive into a blissful moment of peace. All of us have our opinions on books, varying from “I don’t even know how to say library correctly” to “I read every chance I get”. However, what if this privilege was taken away from us?…

Knowledge is power. Even more powerful when it’s from a reliable source such as a book. But, what would happen to knowledge and life itself when books are no longer seen as needed? Reading Physical Books vs. EBooks on the Subway Introduction As an avid reader, watching people read on the subway is interesting to me. Seeing what book a person is reading and trying to figure out what type of person they might be based on that one little bit of information has become a sort of hobby of mine. However, I’ve noticed that it’s much more difficult to see what a person is reading if they’re reading on an ebook or their phone. This made me realize a huge advantage to reading on ebooks that I hadn’t considered before; the privacy of it even out in public. So I decided to see how many people choose to read on ebooks, phones, and other smart devices versus how many people choose to read physical books, magazines, and newspapers.…

As a person who likes to read printed books, I would like to argue that printed books are no longer necessary in this digital era as all writing can be stored electronically. As time goes by, we are getting used to a fast-paced life with the frequent use of modern electronic products, so too as the way of reading. The e-book, short of the electronic book refers to books that are created and read through modern information technology and Internet technology, which has realized paperless reading and become more accessible to readers. The birth and thriving of e-books are an inevitable trend as the progress of Internet in this information era and so as the frequency use of e-book across the world. It arouses some concerns for me about whether…

In contrast, computers and tablets are the most useful devices for e-books and they are not too cheap. For students who like reading, it can be a waste of electricity because they spend a lot of time reading a book. These devices can also lead the students to be distracted by other things. Three years ago, the University of California libraries made “an e-book usage survey” which showed paper books are better for undergraduate students because it can be difficult to concentrate in their work while in front of a computer (Kelley and Warburton, "Survey: Undergraduates Prefer Print Over Ebooks"). In addition, some of the students like to hold and overturn quickly a book; they also can write notes in…

For many years paper and ink were the only available platform for reading and transcribing the written word but with a recent surge in reading amongst younger generations and several advances in technology have caused a demand for alternative options to bulky and damage prone paper and ink tomes. Many booksellers rose to the challenge by creating new eReaders capable of holding several hundred books in a small electronic tablet. Though many people enjoy using these tablets for reading, there has been a large and vocal percent of readers who refuse to forsake the world of rustling pages and bound covers. I, personally have no issues with this and indeed would prefer Ink and paper to the electronic copy if I had a choice. Because of this stance I find it particularly discouraging when readers are…less than kind about another’s choice of eReader or book.…

The times updated and futuristic technology has won over the simple and classic possessions of our time can be considered immeasurable. We live in a world where everything has gone digital, or online, but some things are just better left alone. For centuries people have been in pursuit of ways to better the world with technology, whether others wanted to accommodate or to continue to reside in a classical age. As convenient as Ebooks and Kindles are in this day and age, traditional books have an advantage that electronic books and devices do not. Ebooks can also have some advantages over the classic reading materials.…

People are drawn to electronic books because it is something new and whenever something is new it is desired. An article by BBC in 2014 stated: “The sale of printed books will be outstripped by e-books by 2018, a new report by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) has suggested” (BBC News). Though this is one piece of data and these predictions are constantly changing. The prediction makes sense when taking into account the amount of electronic books that students are buying every year. A more recent articles states: “But the digital apocalypse never arrived, or at least not on schedule.…

Given all the points above, it is no wonder why paper books pale in comparison to electronic books. Peter Meyers(2015) sums up in his article "Physics and the Future of Books" that a fully digital book is much more than a bitmapped replica of its print counterpart; moreover, it is imbued with an intelligence that may never be human, but in its advanced, machined state is impressive and satisfying by…

To someone who regards themselves as ‘computer illiterate’ the thought of an ‘electronic-book’ could sound daunting but e-books are slowly invading society as we know it. The establishment of the e-reader has changed the way people read as e-book downloads have definitely altered the way we view and distribute information. They have all the information contained in a book multiplied by a few hundred in a compact handheld tablet, but are these having too large…

It could also be explained by patrons like myself, who go back and forth with their method of purchase. Another obvious pitfall with regard to digital book is that they require battery power. If you are reading somewhere and have no method of charging your device, sooner than later, you will be out of luck. This is clearly not an issue with physical books. All things considered, this technology must be viewed as a mostly positive thing.…
