Interdisciplinary Studies Personal Statement

I never imagined that going back to school would make me feel so alive. New stories, facts, and references feed my mind and my voice, bringing confidence and clarity to my life. In Spain, where I grew up, women were not recognized or encouraged to continue their education or have a voice. Out of ignorance, my father and brothers crashed any impulse that I had as a young girl to let my opinions and my voice out; however, I found alternative ways to express myself through dance, paint and spiritual practices. Even though I am confident in my body and my artistic expression, I have not explored the capacities of my voice and opinions into a professional life so I am developing them through academic studies. I want to …show more content…
I think the BAC program in Interdisciplinary Studies combines several of the top disciplines from CIIS curriculum to support the development and inspire their students. Recently, I have become aware that most topics I encounter in school are composed of many layers of understanding, conditioning and possibility. In order to more thoroughly understand a problem, I must connect with it through different perspectives. Interdisciplinary Studies is a cutting edge methodology because connects and integrates several perspectives. I know that this kind of discipline will enrich my intellect as much as will add purpose to my …show more content…
I thrive in communities where people get together to explore their creativity through movements such as dancing, painting or conscious inquiry. My sangha studies the art of transparent communication (TC) under Thomas Hubl, a contemporary mystic. This spiritual practice tunes into the subtleties of interpersonal communication. TC is based in bringing one 's attention beyond the story being shared and paying attention to the space between the words; it is here that one is able to tap into information that is unspoken but needs to come forth, often called “blind spots”. This practice requires a high degree of deep listening and attunement. Another collaborative learning experience was my training to become a facilitator for VOEG (Victim Offender Education Groups). In the course, we explored different scenarios related to trauma-healing and based on Restorative Justice. The group generates trust through vulnerability, honesty and willingness to participate. We learned from each other’s experiences while our capacity for empathy grows from feeling alive in the interconnection of our

Actions speak louder than words, and in Karen Joy Fowler’s novel, We are All Completely Beside Ourselves, she presents many different themes regarding communication and its importance. Rosemary Cooke’s father, a psychology professor at the University of Indiana, suggests that there is a difference between communication and language by explaining that “language is more than just words” (Fowler 98). Fowler agrees with the professor, language is much more than words, but they differ when he argues that “language is the order of words and the way one word inflects another” (Fowler 98). In We are All Completely Beside Ourselves, Fowler suggests that communicating with others can go beyond verbal form. Different forms of communication help us exchange…

In Professor Jovanovic’s book “Hey Ladies, Stop Apologizing… and Other Career Mistakes Women Make”, she conveys a very important message for women— to be confident, to live outside your comfort zone, and never be sorry. This guidebook acts as an educational tool for women, and it’s main focus is on women’s empowerment. Professor Jovanovic argues that it is imperative for women to understand that in a world where their accomplishments are devalued, under appreciated, and seldom recognized in a way that is similar to their male counterparts, that they need to take control of their lives, and essentially be their own cheerleader. I used to think studying is the least amusing thing I can do with my life and that I would cheer so hard if I do not have to go to school at all. To me, education is something kids were being force to have; people around me all go to school or study at home. Since I was born and raised in cities, I have never come across anyone who was unable to go to school. I felt that education is a right; but in reality, education is only a privilege. Learning about the life of the two protagonist, in A Thousand Splendid Suns, I came I understand that there are a lot of children out there who would risk their life for education, unlike me who do not want to go to school at all.…

Letting be It is my personality to have a desire to fix things, so the concept of letting be does not come particularly easily to me. Doane & Varcoe, (2015) state that the concept of “letting be” is one of the most essential skills of relational practice in nursing. Throughout the communication I had with my friend I found myself always wanting a solution. I always wanted to try different alternative therapies to assist her in moving forward. I wanted her to open up to me so I could sew up her painful mental and emotional wounds.…

Upon entry of the story “Talking Back,” by Bell Hooks she declares that “talking back” means speaking as an equal to an authority figure. “It meant daring to disagree and sometimes it just meant having an opinion,” (Hooks 152). Hooks states that she apprehends that women of different races should be able to express their opinions, not just inside the household but also out. She then reveals some of her early trials as a writer and the complications with being a female, African American child (Hooks). In my opinion, being a female with sympathy on the subject of achieving women 's rights, I do agree to an extent with what Hooks has declared.…

Opening myself to feelings and the feelings of others requires ongoing practice. To use the knowledge acquired during this course one needs to identify and understand the barriers to effective communication. These barriers maybe physical, and or psychological obstacles that interfere with the planning, organization, transmission and understanding of a message. In my case I have identified my obstacles as been impatience, not listening and most importantly not been able to express myself in an effective way. I have come to learn that the natural result of such obstacles or interfering factors leads to the misunderstanding of messages.…

These feelings of self-worth and confidence assisted me as I navigated my way through the identity versus role confusion stage. Erikson (as cited in Swartwood, p. 84) states that the developmental crisis of this stage is centered on the establishment of identity. Role confusion can be experience by an adolescent who does not successfully establish an identity in occupation, gender roles, politics, and religion. Erikson’s work has been expanded on by James Marcia (as cited in Swartwood, p. 84), who has recognized four “identity statuses.” These statuses “explain unique differences in how young adults search for an answer to…” who they are, based on their levels of exploration and commitment (Swartwood, p. 84).…
