Intercultural Experience Fieldwork Report: Santeria in the Cuban Culture
The topic I chose to study and write my research paper about is the Santeria religion, specifically Cuban immigrants in Miami as well as some first generation Americans who are descendants of native Cubans. My goal was to learn more about the secretive religion that many people seem to automatically fear and hate and provide evidence that the religion is in fact a peaceful one that aims to improve humans to become the best persona they can be. In order to accurately depict the religion, I had to do much research online, only to find out that most of the information online is written by everyday people who do not practice the religion as their own, due to this, I had to

All the Saints found in Santeria have a Catholic Saint that is equivalent to the “Santo”, which is how the followers of Santeria address their Saints. Each Santo has their own “Pataki”, which is the story of the “Orisha”, which is the proper term to use when speaking of a Santo in terms of Santeria, and these “Patakis” describe the Santo in depth allowing the Santeros to understand the Santo and cater their worship to each specific Santo in order to please them. Santeria worship is mainly practiced by an initiated member that has received the first blessing, which is basically the initiation into the religion. Once someone has become initiated, they speak directly to the Santos in order to help them along the follower’s life. The Santos have the power to do many beautiful things, but they may also do very horrible things if mistreated. Some of the common blessings the Santos bestow on their followers is the ability to see into one’s future, allow one to rid their “fate” or path in life of any evil that may be affecting them or will affect them in the future. The Santos all have specific topics that they may help people with, ranging from employment all the way to avoiding certain death, like a terminal illness for example. The religion is not focused on cursing others or causing harm to people, however, there is a side of Santeria exists due to the fundamental rule of Dualism, which is commonly known as “Palo”, that has the ability to harm others, although not intended to do so, there are few who perform these “Black Magic”

Latino identity is a reflection of one’s culture, with religion being a significant aspect. More often than not, religion and Latino family relationships are interconnected. Latino families, especially parents and grandparents, are fervent in their religious beliefs. Latinos will often instill Catholicism/Christianity as their main religion and teach their children to have pride in their culture. Religion can be a delicate system to handle, as it can commonly become a source of loving devotion to families or the source of breaking families apart.…

While I wrote about Cuban Catholicism for my encyclopedia-style summary, there are not any specifically Cuban churches existing in Minnesota. Because of this, I decided that the next closest thing would be to visit a Spanish-language Catholic mass. I visited St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview, Minnesota. While St. Odilia is not an exclusively Hispanic community, they do offer a Spanish mass every Sunday afternoon. There is a relatively large Hispanic community in Roseville, Shoreview, Arden Hills, and the surrounding areas which attend the mass.…

The Cuban-American community has been successful in the United States for a great number of reasons; based on both their efforts and the efforts of the United States. For starters when Cubans migrated to The United States between the years of 1959-1979 a large number of them were highly educated, wealthy and had some political power. Alongside of all that they also had knowledge of the English language so communicating would not be an issue once in the U.S. They were also “white” looking Cubans that first migrated, which would have made life in the United States at the time a whole lot easier. The Cuban-American people began arriving to Miami at a time when the city was on the verge of expanding and growing.…

Being born in a Cuban family is a privilege for me. A common phrase in Cuba is “el que no tiene de congo tiene de carabali” and that phrase comes from the fact that every Cuban is a derivation of different cultures. Back in time, Cuba was only populated by native Indians, but later on, Europeans took over the country. After make the natives slaves and take them to almost extermination, they brought slaves from Africa. As a result, we became a mix of different cultures.…

    Essay On Hispanic Culture

Coming into this paper I really had no idea what the core values of this culture were besides what you hear and see on TV and around the world. I think that a barrier I would definitely need to overcome is the negative image that society has put into not only mine but the rest of the world brain about Hispanics. They aren’t just here to “take our jobs”, they are people just like you and me, not everyone in the United States was raised in great riches either. These people tend to do whatever it takes so that they can make the money they need to provide for their families just like everyone else in this world. A cultural bias I would say I have is that a lot of the times the Hispanics you see are dirty old men that can’t seem to keep their eyes off of under-aged girls, or that they aren’t like the rest of us, but if you think about it this is not a culture to culture thing.…

Kaifa Roland further describes the methods of race and color through the experience of jineteros and luchadores in Cuba. Jineteros and luchadores are translated as ‘hustlers’ and ‘those who struggle’ (Roland, p. 53). Due to the Cuban government’s belief in maintaining socialist values through the separation of Cubans and tourists, jineteros and luchadores often find themselves restricted from the leisurely experiences that tourists experience. One Cuban insists that the reason all Cubans are denied entrance into hotels is because of the possibility of jineteros interacting with tourists, stating that “the only way to fight [the exportation of negative images] is to prohibit [all Cubans]” (Roland, p. 64). Because jineteros are perceived to give a negative image, all Cubans are restricted from tourist spaces.…
