The country has a history that has alternately marginalized and ignored the knowledge of the powerless and then domesticated and assimilated that experience into mainstream and middle class schemas (Flower, 2003, p. 39). African American culture has been marginalized and used for popular culture. The attempt to talk across differences must not merely acknowledge this history, but it must also deal directly with the relationships of power and distrust it has left behind (Flower, 2003, p. 39). President Obama is the first African American president in United States history. He has done his part in bringing black culture more to the forefront of the country. To an extent, he also is able to bridge together black culture and white culture together throughout his presidency. Along with being able to deal with the different cultures here in the United States, President Obama has navigated his way through cultures from around the world.
