James Joyce Interaction

In one of the most iconic and famous books written by James Joyce known as Dubliners, there is a short story that also like the other short stories in the book ends with an epiphany. This short story is called The Dead and in the book there is a part where two characters have an interaction and through seeing this interaction there can be many observations made about the protagonist and the other character. The two characters that are in the discussion or interaction are Gabriel and Miss Ivor. Both of these characters impact the story heavily from meeting each other and having a discussion. The observations from seeing the discussion taking place shows a lot about the character “Gabriel” on how he dislikes Ireland, cares a lot about how people …show more content…
The whole discussion did end off on some bad terms even though it might not seem like it. The first piece of evidence is when in the story Miss Ivor questioned Gabriel on why he is sick of his country and then she concluded that of course he does not have a reason why he is. At the end of the discussion she also called him a “West Briton” once again but this time she did not say that she was simply joking (Joyce, Page 165). This is a clear sign that she was also annoyed with Gabriel as much as Gabriel was annoyed with her. She even insults him at the end of their discussion which shows how irritated she was by his remarks and she did not apologize for it or dismiss it as a joke. Even during his speech she was showing more signs of being aggressive towards him. Gabriel expresses this by saying “It unnerved him to think that she would be at the supper table, looking up at him while he spoke with her critical quizzing eyes” (Joyce, Page 167). This is another sign that Miss Ivor was still annoyed by his behaviour before. The last piece of evidence showing that she left because of Gabriel was when Gabriel offered to take her home she said she did not need it and also Mary Jane finding it strange that she left early. (Joyce, Page 170). This shows that it was strange for her to leave early because “Mary Jane gazed after her, a moody expression on her face” (Joyce, Page 170). With all the evidence it clearly shows that she left because of her and Gabriel’s altercation because she was looking at him strangely, denied to be taken home by him and did something out of character which was leaving the party

James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the Mountain is a work concerned with the notion of change. Centered on a Harlem-based Pentecostal church, Baldwin unpacks multiple character studies to explore whether or not true growth and change are attainable. Through flashbacks, Baldwin reveals the main characters’ actions are merely products of their respective pasts. That is, these characters are shown to suggest an overarching sense of determinism plagues humanity—a determinism in which all actions can be traced to a cause and effect, where all causes are the effects of previous causes.…

“Roman Fever” is about the cattiness of the stereotypical woman. The story revolves around two women, Alida Slade and Grace Ansley. The women hide passive aggressive undertones and back-handed compliments under a sickly-sweet smile and a pretend innocence. Throughout the story, Edith Wharton uses rhetorical devices to help the reader uncover how petty the women truly act. Despite Robert leaving being the catalyst for her return to Grand Isles, I think that her suicide had more to due with her belief that this was the only way to escape the bonds placed onto her by society than being caused by him leaving. I think this because when she is walking to the ocean and when she is swimming, she thinks not only about having “no human being whom she wants near her except Robert,” but also about viewing symbols of her place in society as a woman, like her children, as “antagonists who have overcome her… and sought to drag her into the soul’s slavery for the rest of her days” (Chopin, pg. 300). She committed suicide in defiance of the idea that Leonce and her children could “possess her, body and soul” (Chopin, pg. 302). In conclusion, despite Robert being absent for a large portion in the middle of the book, his and Edna’s relationship is very important.…

Plot summary The story centers on Gabriel Conroy on the night of the Morkan sisters' annual dance and dinner in the first week of January 1904, perhaps the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6). Typical of the stories in Dubliners, "The Dead" develops toward a moment of painful self-awareness; Joyce described this as an epiphany (a moment of truth). The narrative generally concentrates on Gabriel's insecurities, his uneasiness, and the defensive way he deals with his discomfort. The story culminates at the point when Gabriel discovers that, through years of marriage, there was much he never knew of his wife's past.…

Though the narrator’s primary focus in James Joyce’s “The Dead” is Gabriel Conroy and his thoughts and feelings, there is no doubt that there is a strong feminine presence throughout. Gabriel’s self-identity in “The Dead” depends on the presence of three women and without these women, Gabriel would experience no conflict and thus the storyline would be extremely different. His characterization is first revealed when he speaks to Lily, the caretaker’s daughter. She responds to the literal meaning of his words to her, which identify Gabriel’s need to say the correct things in the situations he finds himself in. Ms. Molly Ivors, a seeming equal to Gabriel’s assumption of his level of intelligence, challenges him and reader begin to see Gabriel’s…

In fact, multiple times she defies his requests and emancipates herself from him; she moves into her own home, doesn’t listen to commands, and begins to be financially independent. Léonce describes Edna as his “sole object of his existence” (5), and the fact that she shows “little interest in things which concern[s] him” (5) was discouraging.
