Promoting and respecting informed decision-making is an essential value and responsibility outlined in The Canadian Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses. The CNA Code of Ethics defines promoting and respecting informed decision-making as, “nurses recognize, respect and promote a person ’s right to be informed and make decisions” (2008, p. 11). More specifically, Registered Nurses are ethically responsible for advocating on behalf of a client if they believe their health is in jeopardy due to circumstances outside of their control (CNA, 2008, p. 11). For example, in 1994 at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, nurses voiced concerns repeatedly about the quality of client care experienced by children undergoing cardiac surgery…
Professional nursing bodies have a lot of say about interprofessional collaboration. As discussed in concept definitions, there is the RNAO with a best practice guidelines for interprofessional care, and the CIHC created a interprofessional competency framework. Both of these professional nursing bodies discus different methods and domains of utilizing IPC within the workplace. They also conclude that the patient will have an improved outcome with IPC. Although the professional nursing bodies have lots to say about IPC they have very little to say about working collaboratively in the ICU.…

Team charters are a method to improve communication, cooperation, and team cohesion (McDowell, Herdman, & Aaron, 2011). In health care, when a new interprofessional is forming there are many different disciplines that are brought together to be part of the team. Each practitioner has their own perception of the value they add to the team. Individual perception and attitudes can cause barriers to effective interprofessional collaboration (Sommerfeldt, 2013). When a interprofessional team forms to discuss difficult health care cases for a short duration of time, it will be important to clearly define the goals and expectation for the team.…
The big thing nurses do is educate the patients who would like more information (Starks, Dudzinski,& White). When it is brought to their attention that a patient is thinking about their options, a nurse sits down and explains all the information to the patients so they are educated enough to make a good decision for themselves. Another thing that they have to do, is determine where they stand on the issue. For example, do they think of it as a compassionate way of letting someone go or an overt act of killing (Starks, Dudzinski,& White)? If they work in a state where this is practiced, it is crucial that you know all the facts and exactly where you…
Decision Making in Nursing Nurses make decisions that have life and death implications (Payne, 2015). Nurses must be accountable for their decisions as well as the consequences of those actions (College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, 2012). Clinical decision making is a complex process that requires the nurse to draw from personal knowledge, client history, previous clinical experience, as well as intuition (Banning, 2008; Benner, 1984; Blum, 2010; Payne, 2015; Tanner, 2006). These decisions impact how efficiently, competently, and satisfactorily the client is treated (Etheridge, 2007). Decision making models have been developed to assist nurses with their critical thinking to ensure safe client care and improve client outcomes (Lauri & Salantera, 1995; Tanner, 2006).…

I attended the UCD School of Nursing interprofessional experience where treatment of domestic violence and substance abuse was addressed on two separate days. The first day of the seminar was very interesting to me because it was my first time learning about the signs of domestic violence. I was in a group that consisted of nursing students, and they were all very curious about my role as a Social Worker. They asked me questions such as, what I am currently doing at my internship and what made me interested in Social Work. I felt very connected with my group because the members were open to listen to me and they considered all my ideas during the exercises.…

Do clinical rounds (assessments) and patients round with multidiscipline team; 5. Communicate with other team members regarding patients care through documentation or verbal communication. The NP is responsible for initial/follow-up assessment for referrals; monitoring patient’s condition; preparation for the patient who’s going to another facility for treatment and their returns; preparation for patient’s discharge; working with other health care professionals to provide the best possible care for patients; providing outpatient care if necessary. Such descriptions met the NP core competency on clinical roles (CNA, 2008), which requires NP to integrate advanced knowledge and skills to provide cultural sensitive holistic care and health promotion in accordance with the individual condition and…
The interests of the nurse in this case should involve both the child and the family. The nurse can not only bank on the child’s decision lest he or she lands in trouble with the law. The parents should be informed if they are not present. If the nurse had ignored the oncology patient wishes, Health, Portability and accountability act would have been violated. Nurses should be keenly decisive in this modern world as lots of agencies govern healthcare today.…
Introduction When making clinical decisions, nurses need to consider many different aspects including clinical knowledge, clinical standards, experience and patient-centered decision making. It requires nurses to have a high level of critical thinking. Professional boundaries which acts as limits to maintain therapeutic relationship between professionals and clients can be regarded as a basis of clinical decision making. In the given scenario, Sam Mills is an RN who works with five general practitioners and two other RNs. Sam’s neighbor, Lee, came for redressing chronic wound one day.…
In nursing practice decision-making is pivotal to delivery of quality patient care. Nurses are trained to make critical decisions that can often save a life. The NMC Code 2015 emphasises on decision making skills when it states that” make sure that peoples physical, social and psychological needs are assessed and responded to. The people left in nurse’s care rely and trust that decisions made regarding their care are in their best interests. When first beginning Leadership and Management in nursing I figured that my previous business management course would overlap with this course, but I was still curious in seeing how they differed. I was looking forward to learning about different situations nurse managers are presented with and how to address them in a confident and efficient manor. I wanted gain an understanding of what qualities, methods and characteristics represent an effective nurse manager. I was especially, looking forward to learning more about how ethical and legal decisions are made and what decision making skills are used in the process, how to effectively deal with other staff and motivates them, and about organizing patient care. I planned on using this course…
