Heart troubles is an issue on both sides of my family, particularly the paternal side. My grandfather was from a family of 9 children, and they unfortunately all died from heart related issues except for one who died of cancer. My grandfather had his first heart attack at a very young age, had two open heart surgeries, and had 19 stents in his heart. My dad and many of his siblings have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. In order to try to keep from following this trend, I try to stay away from high fat and cholesterol containing foods and try to exercise regularly. I also plan to avoid smoking and to maintain a healthy weight throughout my lifetime. Lung, Melanoma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Breast, and Uterine Cancers are the cancers I have been able to locate in my immediate family history. Knowing that some of these cancers are hereditary, I know that it might be difficult to prevent, but it is not difficult to detect the problem early. To protect myself from these cancer risks, having regular cancer screenings, such as a mammogram and checkups can help significantly. Also, eating healthy and avoiding known carcinogens such as tobacco usage will help me stay cancer free. Along with cancer, mental illness also seems to be a present in both sides of my family. Some known cases in my family include: anger management difficulties, schizophrenia, depression, and other unknown mental illnesses. Mental illness is a touchy subject, and many times isn’t talked about in my family. In order to veer away from this, I know that I need to make sure that my family members are keeping me in check mentally. I should also know the signs and warnings of mental illness so I can evaluate if I have the
