With Freedom and Justice for All.
In her book, From Goods to a Good Life – Intellectual Property and Global Justice, Madhavi Sunder explores the rich connections between cultural production and human freedom. Sunder states that, “Intellectual property does more than incentivize the production of more goods, the law fundamentally affects the ability of citizens to live a good life”. This book takes a look at intellectual property and develops an understanding that peers further than innovation, and look to understand justice. Sunder believes that current intellectual property laws have been misused to stifle “participatory culture” and looks further to see if stronger home-grown intellectual property protection can benefit developing nations. Sunder takes a hard look at inventor’s incentive to create and their economic focus, as she breaks down the notion that creators will not create without the economic benefits that intellectual property presents. Linda was a composer in South Africa who recorded a song that would change the world. Once he produced this song, it crossed the Atlantic Ocean where it was transformed into The Lion Sleeps Tonight. This song then found its way into The Lion King, and made millions of dollars for Disney, but only provided $1 for Linda. He would later go on to die from his illnesses that could have been treated if he was provided proper compensation for his song. Sunder blames Linda’s death on Disney and their ability to abuse free culture. The story illustrates the value of free culture and how it is not always fair culture.
