Growing up I had an interesting childhood. I adored television shows that portrayed intellectual information on science, animals, and how the human body works. With my mother being a nurse, I wanted to understand what she saw and how I could impress her. Since, at the time, it was my mother, older brother, and I, I felt as though I needed to reach my mother on a different level by impressing her in many ways. I spent most of my time learning an abundance of information in many different fields, but finding my speciality and passion still with me from the beginning.
At the age of 13, I weighed 198 pounds. I was obese, had high cholesterol, and on the verge of becoming diabetic. My family was large and unhealthy. Outside of my family I was an outcast and bullied by others. Unhealthy and hating the person I had become, I knew I needed to make a change. While taking summer school in 2005, I walked two miles each way to school in the blistering heat and humidity of Virginia, in addition to going to the gym and pool every Friday afternoon. By September I had lost 27 pounds. This was the new beginning to a life of motivation.

At age 11 I sit there in the living room in front of my television, listening to the popping of kernels as I anxiously snuggle up into my blanket, with my family, awaiting to watch our weekly Tuesday night show, “The Biggest Loser”. That show is how my love for health and wanting to study it started, therefore the article that most connected with me was “My Soul to Keep, My Weight to Lose” by Alice Randall. I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

Growing up in a military family never allowed me to settle down and call a single place home. Starting with what felt like a new life every four years, with new people in an unfamiliar place definitely helped to shape me into the person that I am today. Yet after a short time, what seemed to be unimaginable was fairly simple. I was able to adjust quickly; I soon graduated middle school and was accepted into Wayne School of Engineering.…
