Register to read the introduction… An IEP must be developed and placement must also be determined, which is whether to put the student in the Least Restrictive Environment according to IDEA. There is a point system that is used to determine how the students are placed. Students that are identified with an Intellectual Disability must have significant problems in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Once a determination is made that a student has an ID and needs special education, the team develops an IEP for the student. The ultimate goals for students identified with an ID is that they are educated with the general education setting, engage in all learning activities from general education classes and teachers must accommodate the students as needed or modify the lessons as needed. Most of the students end up in a general education class if they have shown significant progress and is able to function with the other students in the classroom. The most important thing that was gained from the interviews was to keep parents involved in the lives of their children and students will be successful both in and outside of the classroom. The laws regarding special education are meant to change our children for the better. Special needs students deserve a fair chance at a quality education and should not be deterred because they need some form of special education. Students with any disabilities should be treated like any other person with dignity and respect. The issues many teachers and students face are not enough support staff to help correct the problems identified. The tests determine the students have a problem and laws say the schools have to deal with the issue, but this is nearly impossible when they do not have the proper resources to do so. The process takes resources, time and money which most public schools do not have so the teachers do what they can for the students, which is why they ask for so much parental and community support to make a difference.
