Integrity Is One Of My Biggest Pet Peeves

One of the most important traits a person can have is integrity. If you have integrity, you stand by your beliefs and you are an honest person. A good leader should have integrity because people need to be able to trust that they will do what is best for the people they are leading. This is why hypocrisy is one of my biggest pet peeves; I value leadership and standing firm in your beliefs. Have you ever had a friend or family member tell you not to do something, but then proceed to do exactly what they told you not to do? This is very frustrating and I see it happen very frequently. I often see this in some people who have strong religious beliefs. For example, they will tell you not to swear or have sex, which is consistent with their religious beliefs, but when their parents or their friends who may have the same beliefs aren’t around, they will do these things themselves. Now I am not saying it is wrong to be religious or to have certain beliefs, however, I consider it important to practice what …show more content…
If Martin Luther King Jr. gave the “I Have a Dream” speech, but decided to do nothing to fight for the civil rights of Americans, regardless of race, he would have had no impact on the world. Would you believe in a man who “had a dream” but did nothing about that dream? I certainly wouldn’t. Integrity and initiative are inspiring, and it is hard to trust a man who can’t stand by his beliefs. Thankfully, Martin Luther King Jr. took action about his dream, but there are many people who don’t. I have had friends who join student council or a sports team and are really excited to be a part of that team yet they don’t help out with events or they don’t practice before games. This may not be as big as an issue as the “I Have a Dream” speech, but it is the same idea; being the face of an issue, event, or team but refusing to take action within

What Dr. King says in his speech “I have A Dream” is true; all of our fates are intertwined. We must learn to walk together and no one should rest until each man, woman, and child, regardless of race, age, or gender, is able to practice this unalienable right of “Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was interested in the principles of the constitution of the United States applying to all people, he would not rest until "...black men as well as white men will be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and his vigor for his cause aroused in the hearts of many men and woman the hope that this nation could be better. It is truly inspirational to listen to Dr. King’s iconic speech and see the faces of those people in the crowd, many of whom experienced terrible acts of injustice, fill with hope at the words of their fearless leader. This speech was not meant to entice violence, As Dr. King states, "let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred" we see that he choose not to alienate and subjugate his oppressors.…

Another trait that I have found to be an essential part of effective leadership is authentic value-based leadership. In this sense, a leader is well aware of his or her values and strives to live out those values on a daily basis. No one can be authentic by trying to imitate someone else. Sure you can learn from other’s experiences, but in order to be an effective leader, you must be rooted in who you are and what matters most to you. (George 163).…
