The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that cancer accounts for approximately 580,000 deaths annually in the United States, second only to heart disease. Fifty percent of all cancer patients receive chemotherapy at an annual cost upwards of 157 billion dollars in 2010 (Kartje and Schroer). This proposal is driven by the current lack of integrative wellness facilities that support both conventional and alternative medicine. There is a disconnect between Eastern and Western approaches to medicine causing tension rather than mutual respect and historically the relationship between these physicians have been strained. There are increasing physician referrals for alternative treatments, a sign …show more content…
The therapeutic concept in Chinese Medicine is the normalization of the bodies function, the essence of preventive medicine. This acknowledges the paradigm shifts and/or trends that have occurred in healthcare design creating a greater focus on health and life balance rather than sickness (Cama, 135). In distinguishing illness patterns, weakness suggests yin and strength represents yang. Feng Shui, another Eastern approach to treatment, embraces the belief that we are one with nature and that all energy is interconnected. It teaches that energy from our natural and built environments affects our individual human energy (Lyons, 1). Eastern medicine targets underlying symptoms with a focus on preventative medicine allowing for optimal health and …show more content…
This differs from Eastern medicine in its approach to treatment because it relies on industrially produced medications subject to rigorous safety and effectiveness protocols. Dr. Brookman was recommended as a primary resource in the research process. He gave up a successful Pulmonary practice and founded the Anti Aging Health Institute in Philadelphia. His previous practice was focused predominantly on hospital based critically ill patients. “The practice of modern Western Medicine waits for the "product" (patient) to break and then tries to fix it with approaches that mask the symptoms, but never really [target] the underlying problems. This way of practicing is costly, inefficient and overall leads to poor long term results” (Brookman). There is a trend throughout healthcare to implement evidence-based design which is the analysis of current best evidence to support medical advances leading to beneficial outcomes. Evidence-based health care design models incorporate both Eastern and Western Practices. The WELL Building Standard is an evidence-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring the performance of building features to improve human health and wellbeing through the built environment (WELL Building Standards). Implementing these standards organizes optimal environmental health ideals and facilitates evidence-based
