Clan, Hierarchy, Adhocracy, and market are the four different categories that are identified by the two parts of the competing values framework they fall under. Each category will support two of these four competing values: flexibility and discretion, external focus and differentiation, stability and control, internal focus and integration(Kinicki & Williams, 2013, p.229). An example of this is Verizon, who began with market driven culture, but has recently changed to a clan style of culture. Using the case study, `Verizon is creating a Culture That Focuses on Shareholder Value` we are going to discuss which category and value that Verizon is currently using as its organizational culture. Verizon began with a market style culture, which focused on strong external focus and placed a value on market control and stability.…

During their onboarding process, they teach associates the four main concepts for delivering the brand message and defining what the organization culture and values are. According to Jones, (2012e) organizational culture is defined as, “the set of shared values and norms that control organizational members’ interaction with each other and with people outside the organization” and value is defined as, “general criteria, standards, or guiding principles that people use to determine which types of behavior, outcomes are desirable or undesirable.” Victoria’s Secret instills culture and value to their employees with this first concept, which is that the “customer rules” and everything need to begin and end with the motivation and drive to fulfill every customer’s desire (Victoria’s Secret Inc.-About US, n.d). The second is “passion leads to success,” meaning that Victoria’s Secret pursues excellence and encourages their employees to be emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually engaged in their work (Victoria’s Secret Inc.-About US, n.d). There was a time where Victoria’s Secret hired anyone, even if they had no experience, but with the transition into commission and…

Understanding Culture & Values Culture is defined as a set of values, norms, guiding beliefs, and understandings shared by organization members with new members as an accurate manner of thinking, feeling, and behaving (Daft, 2016). Though challenging, it is possible for an outsider to discern the cultural values of an organization, accurately, through the analysis of artifacts, such as symbols, ceremonies, dress, etc. The authors Martinez, Beaulieu, Gibbons, Pronovost, and Wang stated, “Culture is trickier to define, as well as to analyze” (2015, p. 331). However, the analysis of artifacts is possible, but difficult to decipher in an accurate manner because the individual does not have all of the relevant information for the…
