Over the years this type of thinking had changed into what we think of as possessions. It is a bittersweet subject. Some argue that having possessions show a sort of responsibility. Aristotle claims that the ownership of tangible goods helps to develop moral character. Others such as, Jean-Paul Sartre argue that ownership goes beyond possessions and into intangible things as well. Everybody I believe, is defined by their actions and their possessions as well. The three things that could be used to define me are my truck, my animals and my willingness to help people.

First of all, the two trucks that I own. I own a 1976 Ford F-150 that I restored my myself with the time I was in Worland High School. I believe, just as Aristotle said that owning something can make you have higher responsibilities this is true nonetheless. I worked very hard to get the truck to where it is now and I am always trying to keep it spotless and running in good condition. This puts a huge responsibility on

Owning a pet can be a major burden to most people. Some may argue owning such luxuries are detrimental to a persons way of being humble and living with only what they need in the ideals of Plato. Others, such as myself, look towards the ideals of Aristotle in that it develops a sense of moral character and can be a good learning experience especially for children. I own one dog and three cats and it is a pain just to feed them all but this shows responsibility and that you can care for something else besides yourself. Sartre's view of being proficient is a skill means you truly own something could not be more easily recognizable than here. Owning an animals shows you have feeling and care which personally I believe are two absolutely a skill everyone should be proficient

People always ask ‘If there was a fire, what three items would you save?’ but the truth is, all your experiences and memories will never amount to those three things. In the article “Buy Experiences, Not Things,” James Hamblin uses ethos, logos, and pathos to explore the idea that those who buy experiential things rather than material things are generally happier people. His intended audience is meant to be the younger generation of millenniums. To have a possession is to have control or ownership of something whether it be a materialistic or non-materialistic item. Personal possessions allows us to have a sense of control over something in uncontrollable situations, even when we do not have control of ourselves. In the shorty story, “The Things They Carried”, the author Tim O’Brien used detailed imagery to show how personal possessions, physical objects, reflects the internal objects they desperately try to hold on to. O’Brien describes some of the things his comrades carried stating, “Kiowa, a devoted Baptist carried an illustrated New Testament that had been presented to him by his father, who taught Sunday school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma” (323), showing that Kiowa’s bible was…

I think “stuff” and our capitalist society’s push for consumerism negatively impacts the quality of my life when I realized how much “stuff” I have accumulated throughout the years with little value to me. There is so much that I treat with such little divine value that it loses its materiality and importance to myself.
