Construction for Cold Temperatures
Before you can heat a dog house, you need one that is properly constructed to withstand the elements. Heating in a poorly constructed dog house won't keep the dog warm. The heat will escape through the open doorway or cracks along the outer walls.
Size of the House
The house should be large enough for your dog to enter, turn comfortably and rest without being cramped. It shouldn't be too large for the size of the dog. Too much space around the dog will release its body heat.

The flap should allow the dog access while keeping wind and rain away from the interior. Clear vinyl or a piece of carpet would work well.

Heated Mat
You don't want to add a conventional heating pad to the dog house since it's not made for that purpose. A dog could chew on the cord, which could give the dog a fatal shock. A heating pad or mat will be rated for use in a kennel. The cords are wrapped in steel or pvc, which will protect the wires from becoming a chew toy. The mat should cover the entire floor without overlapping the wall. If you choose a model that doesn't have a chew resistant cord, you can run the cord through PVC piping.
Heated Dog Bed
A heated dog bed is almost like a heated mat except the dog bed is meant to be used indoors. If you have a dog house constructed with insulation and waterproofing, a heated dog bed might work in the space. You risk shocking the dog if the bed is used in a space that is too damp. In most cases, the bed should only be used inside the home like the garage or other drafty space.
