Instructional Strategies and Rigor
During my observation of Ms. Perry I was impressed by her use of scaffolding with the students to ensure that all students were learning, below are a few examples of how she used instructional strategies and rigor in the classroom:
Ms. Perry had the students who needed additional help with their diction worksheets to review the sound/letter cards to decide which vowel rule to use for their spelling words. Ms. Perry explained the concept clearly to the students and allowed them the opportunity to use higher order thinking to gain an understanding for the correct spelling of the word.
Another way that Ms. Perry reinforced learning, was by having the students work together to find an solution to solving the

Perry used positive reinforcement with the students during the session by having the students “kiss they brain” having the student stand and give a “yippie”, etc.
Student Engagement
The students in Ms. Perry classroom were very engaged, Ms. Perry asked the students to think or wait before answering some of the questions, which allowed all of the students to take part in the learning activity. I observed that the students were focused and on task for most of the lesson. I also noticed when the students did get a little restless; Ms. Perry gave the students movement time for about one minute then continued the lesson.
The students also took part in selecting where they would work for center, the students had a clear understanding of how the centers worked and was able to work with very little help from the teacher.
Ms. Perry used excellent classroom management skills as well as continuing to review the classroom throughout the

Ms. Perry posted the following web domains in her computer center: www.sheppardsoftware.com, www.turtlediary.com , www.Henryanker.com, and www.star fall.com, which the students could go to during center time. When speaking to Ms. Perry she also explained that she uses the Imagine online during her lessons with the students. During center time the students used the Smart Board in order to work on skills that were being taught.
Things I plan to incorporate in my own classroom
Concept Board/Wall
I like how Ms. Perry used the concept boards by asking the students the following question written on a sheet of chart paper: How can maps help us? She had the students write their answers on a post-it note and add it to the chart paper. Her concept wall allowed to students to express themselves using writing and drawing for example her wall also included the student’s drawing of a map.
I plan to start using the concept board within the next two weeks.
Workshop Board
I also observed the Workshop Board for centers that Ms. Perry uses in the classroom, on this board she gave the students directions on how to select a center to work in; as well as the expectations for working in the

The book titled "Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire" by Rafe Esquith is a book that went in-depth and uncovered many tips and tricks for educators and future educators. A variety of information was presented throughout this novel from the author's own experiences in his classroom. Information and experience in this book was also pulled from past and present students' experiences as well as family members and other people in Esquith's community. Esquith portrays his ways of teaching as fun, purposeful, and overall beneficial to the student's lives in and out of the classroom or school setting. Three strategies Rafe Esquith used to ensure student's success were allowing his students to fail, testing his students without standardized testing, and instilling life skills and qualities that pertain to both the classroom and everyday life.…

Hypothesis Ms. Mundatuchundayil or also referred as Ms. M teaches second grade at St. Vincent de Paul. I have been observing this class for about seven months about every Wednesday. This is a Catholic setting where I had to attend Mass and was allowed to talk about religious views so it’s different than most practicums I hear about in class. From my observations, I hypothesize that Ms. M focuses on cultural responsive, DAP, and children’s behavior in order to manage and organize the classroom. Cultural responsive involves poverty, guidance, and linguistic competence which means interplay of genes, development, culture, and experience that defines common humanness and individual personality (Gartrell, 2014).…

I applied strategies, such as the following: scaffold instruction, manipulatives, Piaget’s Stages of Development, and chunking the lesson. From my own personal experience of having a specific learning disability, I have the ability to be more empathic towards working with students with disabilities and apply my pedagogy knowledge of evidenced-based strategies. If I didn’t apply both my experience of having a disability and pedagogy to the lesson, I would be an effective teacher candidate to the students, resulting students to not have a meaningful learning experience. I had the lesson incorporate more student interaction and engagement by having the students ask peer questions: “How many more students like ______ over ___________?” Both Mrs. Corcoran and I have found that when students are more engaged in the lesson, that it increase the amount of material they are learning, increases classroom participation, and decreases student errors.…

Throughout the year, 4th grade completes a few novel studies as a class. After observing and planning a novel study with my teacher for Because of Winn Dixie, I was able to plan one on my own. I developed a novel study unit for Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I chose this book because of it’s difficulty level in order to challenge my students this late in the year. I also chose to use this book and create this unit to make connections to other standards and subject areas that the students are learning about this time of year.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

They had success and are now switching on a regular basis. They offered a change of environment and it was very helpful to the students. To prevent potty accidents she offers regular bathroom breaks but has specific times for bathroom breaks too. She brings in kids that are potty training first, then those who are trained, and last are those are still in diapers but not training.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
