Learning is a very unique concept as in one regard some people might refer to learning as a means of retaining knowledge while others might refer to learning as a means of understanding reality (Schmeck, 1988). But by definition learning is a process through which individuals acquire, assimilate new knowledge, and behaviour changes. Reflectors take a ‘back-seat’ and like to completely observe a situation so that they can see all the angles of each issue in a situation so that they can make a wholly fair judgement on a subject. They like to accumulate all the facts before coming to a decision on a subject. They enjoy collecting information and analysing it so they tend to elongate the process and hold-off making a decision as long as possible. They tend to not be at the forefront of conversations and discussions. They enjoy the act of watching people complete their tasks. They listen to other people’s opinions and consider them before making their points heard. They usually have a low profile in social situations. When they speak up they take everything into consideration, not only their own opinions but others also and both the past and the present. (Honey and Mumford, 1992) A theorist is not the most common of the learning styles. Theorists like to prepare and organise information into complicated but sound ideas. In this piece the investigators gathered an array of students (112) that scored highly in particular learning styles and enrolled them in a summer psychology course in Yale University these students were then halved one half was mismatched and thought in a way that did not suit there learning style while the other was thought in a manner that did suit their learning style it was found that two thirds of the students that were thought in there style outscored the students that were thought in a style that did not suit them. (Pashler et al., 2009). I believe that this is proof that students prefer to be thought in a manner that suits their way of thinking.
From my completion of the Honey + Mumford questionnaire I found that I was in Kolb’s terms an accommodating learner, my learning process falls between concrete experiences and active experimentation, so I believe that this means that I am an activist. The questionnaire said that I learn by both doing and feeling, I found it hard to answer many of the questions because I felt that my answers landed right in the middle but I could not disagree with the final result as I have experienced in my life on many occasions that I most definitely learn in this
