Institutionalized racism is purposely discriminating against groups of people through laws or practices. Examples of this include the white flight, Mass incarceration, and the Schooling systems. Individual racism is the beliefs, actions and attitudes of individuals of different races. These can me incorporated within the examples that were listed above. The white flight was a point in history where white people moved to the suburbs to leave behind their houses that were not in the best condition to the other races, such as African Americans, Chinese Americans and Japanese Americans. This has been seen many times throughout American history. It is seen in the Chinese Exclusion Act, the mass incarceration of immigrants in the United States and the Trail of Tears with the Indian Americans. This is a form of Institutionalized racism because this was the discrimination of a certain race. In the text Radicalized Mass Incarceration: Rounding up the Usual Suspects it states “ these designations include the emergence of a prison incarceration society of a carceral state, or the mass incarceration society. All of these terms refer to a large scale shift towards formal incarceration as our collective societal response to crime” (Doing Race 324). This explains that the United States is a society, which radicalized crime. The individual racism is in the cops. They categorize people due to their race. Say there is an African American driving and they forget to put their turn signal on. They are more likely to be pulled over than a white person is because cops stereotype people to arrest people to keep the amount of arrest up.
