Theodore Roethke’s Root Cellar depicts the life of the speaker through the metaphorical use of plants. Much like many things on Earth, plants go through a cycle of life. Plants start off as seeds, then they grow roots and leaves, transition into small plants, finally they become mature plants that contain seeds, and then the cycle starts all over. In the beginning, Roethke paints a dark, vivid picture of the cellar in which the plants are in describing it as “dank as a ditch”(Roethke 1) and having “leaf-mold, manure, lime, piled against slippery planks”(Roethke 9). The description of the cellar ultimately describes the speaker 's mindset about their life which would ironically be considered lifeless and dark.
