Have you ever wondered why Instagram is so popular among the current generation? Well, everyone wants to do what their friends and peers are doing, especially if they have good things to say about it. How many times have you eaten somewhere because you were advised to, or bought that item because everyone else bought one and seemed to enjoy it? Many young adults and teens also want to do whatever it is ”cool” to do at the time. Another fact is that humans, as social beings, enjoy connectivity. Instagram is just that. It is a social media app that allows you to see, like, and post pictures while interacting with other users. If there’s an app able to connect people with others like that, why wouldn’t the younger, app-savvy generation want to …show more content…
When people who use a popular product tell you good things about it, they get you interested. Personally, I found out about Instagram through a good friend, then decided to look into it because other friends of mine also started using Instagram and telling me about how cool it was. Because of all the publicity and how many good things I heard, I decided to look into it. The more people I met who used Instagram, the more I realized that my story wasn’t so uncommon. Good reviews are never the only reason to try out something new, however, and the amount of peers who use Instagram also plays a big part in the app’s popularity. According to Simply Psychology, “Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group. This change is in response to ... group pressure.” One type of conformity, “Normative Conformity,” involves doing what everyone else is doing so that one doesn’t feel excluded from their friends or peers (“What is Conformity”).
