The character of Inspector Goole is the main character of ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J.B.Priestley, which is set in 1912. The play was written in 1945 and set in 1912 as Priestley believed that 1912 was a very different time to 1945, this is because 1912 was a time that people thought it would never change, such as the inequalities between men and women.

Another example of stage directions to introduce the inspector is when it says “sharp ring of the front door bell”. This shows that the inspector’s arrival was rather blunt and intruding. Also we notice the change in atmosphere; from Mr Birling, a capitalist, to Inspector Goole, a
